Consultation
Parent(s) frequently contact me seeking clarification or explanations regarding their child’s academic difficulties. In many cases the student has undergone comprehensive testing by the school district or a private practitioner, yet the parent(s) have little understanding of what was actual found. When asked, they cannot explain the obstacles to skill development, learning, or achievement. All the parent sees is their child dreading school, complaining of feeling ill, and/or spending hours on homework that should only take 30 to 60 minutes. Worst of all the child’s self-esteem and confidence are eroding before their eyes.
A consultation involves a careful review of all the reports and then a meeting with the parent(s) in order to explain what in fact is going on with their child and offer pointed recommendations and referrals. Sometimes further testing or re-testing is recommended.
The goal of a consultation is for the parent to have what I like to call Cocktail Party Conversational Knowledge of the issues at hand. That is, if asked how their son or daughter is doing they need to be able to explain it clearly and plainly to whom ever is inquiring.
It is as simple as that....
